Getting your budgie out of its cage

Do you ever have any problems getting budgie out of its cage? This is a very important phase in inproving your relationship with your budgie, because he/she gets to interact more with you. This is also very hard to do, because a budgie would naturally be afraid of you, being so small! Getting your budgie out of its cage is also very difficult because it feels safe in its cage because it is accustomed to it. Don't forget that lots of talking to your budgie is neccesary, because it reacts positively to kind attention.

First of all, you would need to be ready to spend a lot of time with your budgie, because this can't be done in a day ;). You would also need some treats to encourage your budgie. This can include:

seeds
sweet fruit (no bannanas!)
honey millet ( they love it)
millet

The next part contains information in the last post, so if you know read it, you can skip to the next paragraph.

To get your budgie out of its cage, you have to gain its trust first. This requires a lot of time and attention.
This can be done from his perch, put takes a lot of time. You have to carefully put your hands into the cage (lower if you can, so the budgie can jump on your hands instead of feeding on the perch) with the treats in it and wait patiently until your budgie gets tempted by the food and starts moving. You might have to wait a while, because your budgie might not be accustomed to this type of feeding. Try not to move your hand, because it will feel uneasy about standing on something that's moving. Also, this works best when he/she is very hungry. You can also do this by removing its food tray and feeding him/her a few times a day with this routine, but don't forget to feed him/her! After a month or so, when your budgie is accustomed to feeding on your hand, you can introduce the perching method. Just simply do the same feeding technique, but with your other hand shaped like a pointing finger. Put your food hand lower so that it can only be reached by your perch (pointing) hand. You'll have to wait a while the first few times when your budgie tries to reach your feeding hand without touching the perch, but eventually it will submit and bravely stand on your finger! Repeat this routine for a few months or until your budgie doesn't hesitate when he/she goes to perch on your finger.

Next, you will gain your budgie's trust with physical contact. This excersise has to be done very carefully and delicately, because your budgie might get hurt or scared. When your bird is used to feeding on your finger, you could introduce stroking. While doing this , say consoling words to reassure your budgie. After feeding, take out your feeding hands and blow out the husks of the seeds. Then, put one hand into your cage (the hand depents on what side of the cage your budgie is on) shaped like a pointing finger. Carefully stroke your budgie's chest with the back of your index finger. If your budgie gets scared and runs away, do not chase it, it only scares it more. Just take your hand out of the cage slowly and try again later. When your budgie gets used to you stroking and feeding it, you can proceed to the next step.

Before doing this, move the cage somewhere where there are no windows or glass and the budgie can't fly out of the room (i.e. basement room).Remember, take your budgie out of the cage in the same room each time so it will be aqquainted with its surroundings. When feeding next time, use only your feeding hand, because your budgie is used to you stroking him with your finger, so it is unnecesary to take both hands out of the cage. When the budgie is perched on your feeding hand, slowly move it out of the cage door. When your budgie is just out of the door, stay put until your budgie feels uneasy or full, then move your hand back into the cage. Move your budgie farther away from the cage each time without it being scared. Then, when he/she isn't afraid to be about a metre from the cage, you could try to stroke it when it is feeding on your hand.

Good luck in getting your budgies out of its cage!
